Process and equipment approach

Copper pot-still equipment is developed around the intended spirit and operating method. Still shape, heating, reflux, condensation and the upstream fermentation process all influence the equipment specification. Product-quality targets and acceptance responsibilities must be agreed for the project.

Applications and product requirements

Copper pot stills are used for specified spirit-distillation duties, including malt and other fermented feeds. The package must be developed around the intended spirit, wash properties and operating schedule. Copper contact is one part of the process and does not, by itself, guarantee flavour or a product designation.

Equipment and operating approach

A pot-still assembly can include the pot, neck, vapour connection, heating arrangement, condenser and receivers. Wash and subsequent spirit distillation may need different vessels and duties. Shape, heating, reflux behaviour and condensation interact with the operating procedure. Working charge, headspace and gross vessel capacity must be distinguished.

Pot-still equipmentA pot, vapour path and condenser form the basic arrangement. Heating, contact materials, condenser duty and receivers are selected for the spirit and operating method.

Scope of supply

  • Condensation and receiver interfaces
  • Heating connections and supports
  • Fabrication, testing and documentation

Materials and configuration

ATTOMO’s fabrication scope can be defined for a complete copper assembly or specified copper and stainless-steel components. Coils, jackets and external heating arrangements are options to review against the duty. Specify copper grade, joint details, surface finish, supports, cleaning access and inspection. Repairs require the condition and thickness of the existing equipment to be assessed.

Utilities and operation

Provide charge volume, wash alcohol and solids, cycle time, heating source and cooling-water conditions. Condenser duty and receivers must match the selected operating sequence. Maturation, blending and packaging equipment need separate scope; utility generation and site installation are not implicit in a vessel quotation.

Project questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross volume and charge volume?

Gross volume is the vessel’s total internal volume. Working charge leaves the headspace needed for vapour release and foaming and determines the operational batch basis.

Can I provide my own pot-still drawing?

Yes, an enquiry can be based on drawings. Material, heating duty, design conditions, fabrication tolerances and process-performance responsibility should be specified.

How is the condenser selected?

Use the vapour duty, expected composition, cooling-water temperature and flow, allowable pressure drop and product-handling requirements. Vessel size alone is insufficient.
